But did you know there are many different types of chiropractic techniques ? ; Activator technique, Thompson technique, Toggle technique, Diversified technique and Gonstead technique. 1. What is Gonstead Chiropractic?
Clarence S. Gonstead developed this system of chiropractic protocols. This method utilizes a specific set of protocols and instruments to specifically determine the area of the spine that is the source of the patient’s pain or discomfort.
2. The protocols used in Gonstead chiropractic techniques are;
Gonstead chiropractic uses 5 criterias to assess the spine for problems or misalignment;
- X-ray analysis
- Visualisation and observation
- Instrumentation
- Motion palpation
- Static palpation
3. What are the main differences between Gonstead and other chiropractic techniques?
Firstly, Gonstead chiropractic need x-rays to help determine which parts of your spine need alignment and where the treatment plans should focus. Non Gonstead chiropractors do not require an x-ray during the initial consult and examination, unless if they find something unusual that requires further investigation.
Also, Gonstead chiropractic requires you to remove your clothing and be dressed in a gown. Most other chiropractors will be able to consult and examine you with your own clothing on.
There are variety of tables and tools for adjustments that Gonstead chiropractors uses. Such as the high-low table and the knee-chest table. Other chiropractors will usually use 1 type of treatment table.
Everyone responds to treatments differently, there’s no way to know for sure which is better than the other. Most important thing is to talk with your chiropractor and ask them questions to understand on the treatment plan you will receive. While It is not conclusive, but if you have a good chiropractor, the type of technique shouldn’t be an issue as long as they provide you with honest advice and efficient treatment plan.

5. Do we use the Gonstead technique?
